Your Slack Just Got a Brain

Your Slack Just Got a Brain

This week, a single funding round rewrote the rules of the AI industry, and the tool you use every day to message your coworkers quietly became a lot smarter.

The Big Story

OpenAI Just Raised $122 Billion. Here's What That Means for You.

OpenAI closed a $122 billion funding round this week, valuing the company at $852 billion. That's the largest private capital raise in history, co-led by Amazon ($50B), NVIDIA ($30B), and SoftBank ($30B), with participation from Microsoft, a16z, BlackRock, Sequoia, and over 20 other institutional investors.

The numbers behind the headline: ChatGPT now has 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers. OpenAI is pulling in roughly $2 billion per month in revenue. But here's the part most coverage skips: only about $25 billion of the $122 billion is immediately available cash. The rest is conditional tranches, compute credits, and commitments tied to milestones like an IPO or reaching AGI. Amazon's $35 billion, for example, only fully unlocks if OpenAI goes public. And the company is still projected to lose roughly $14 billion this year.

My take: The real story isn't the dollar amount. It's the consolidation. OpenAI's biggest investors are also its biggest suppliers: Amazon provides AWS cloud, NVIDIA sells the chips, Microsoft hosts Azure infrastructure. Critics call this "circular financing," and they have a point. But for the 900 million people using ChatGPT every week, the practical implication is simpler: OpenAI is building a single AI super app that combines chat, coding, search, and automation into one interface, and they now have the cash runway to make it happen. The era of experimenting with 15 different AI tools is giving way to an era of two or three mega-platforms that do everything. If you've been waiting to commit to an AI workflow, this is the signal to stop waiting.

Tool of the Week: Slack AI

Slack AI features screenshot

What it does: Slack's overhauled Slackbot (powered by Anthropic's Claude) brings meeting intelligence, channel summaries, enterprise search, message drafting, and workflow automation directly into the messaging app you already use at work. Salesforce claims users save an average of 97 minutes per week.

Why it matters this week: Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff announced 30+ new AI-powered features at an event in San Francisco on April 1, 2026. This is the biggest Slack update since the Salesforce acquisition. The headline feature: Slackbot can now listen to your meetings on Zoom, Google Meet, or Slack Huddles, then automatically transcribe, summarize decisions, and create action items. It also functions as an MCP client, meaning it can coordinate tasks across external tools without you leaving the chat window.

How to use it:

  1. Catch up instantly: Open any channel you've been away from and click "Summarize." Slackbot condenses days of messages into bullet points highlighting decisions, questions, and action items.
  2. Search smarter: Ask Slackbot a natural language question like "What did the design team decide about the homepage last Tuesday?" It searches across channels, DMs, files, PDFs, and connected apps like Google Drive.
  3. Let it join your meetings: Enable meeting intelligence in Huddles or connect Zoom/Google Meet. Slackbot will transcribe the call and post a summary with action items in the relevant channel.

Pricing: Free plan (limited AI, 90-day history). Pro: $7.25/user/month (annual). Business+: $12.50/user/month (full AI features). Enterprise Grid: custom pricing. The old $10/user/month AI add-on has been discontinued; AI is now bundled into all paid plans.

Quick Picks

  • Google Stitch — New AI design canvas from Google Labs that turns text or voice prompts into multi-screen UI prototypes with exportable code. Free during Labs phase (350 generations/month).
  • Shopify Tinker — Free mobile app bundling 100+ AI tools from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Create images, videos, logos, and product visuals in one place. No subscription required.
  • Durable Discoverability — New built-in tool that shows small businesses how they appear across Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, with a "Visibility Score" and guided SEO/GEO suggestions. Free to start; paid plans from $12/month.
  • Mercor Data Breach — AI recruiting platform used by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta suffered a 4TB data breach via a supply chain attack. If you've applied through Mercor, check your data exposure.

Deal Alert

Google Stitch is free right now. During its Labs phase, you get 350 standard and 200 pro generations per month at zero cost. If you've ever wanted to turn an idea into a clickable UI prototype without opening Figma or writing code, this is worth trying before paid plans launch later this year.

Pro Tip

How to never say "what did I miss?" again using Slack AI

Next time you return from PTO, a long meeting, or just a busy morning, try this: open each of your key Slack channels and hit the "Summarize" button. In under 10 seconds, you'll get a bullet-point recap of every decision, question, and action item from while you were away. Then use Slack AI search to ask specific follow-ups like "Did anyone tag me about the Q2 budget?" or "What files were shared in #marketing this week?" You can catch up on three days of messages in about five minutes, instead of the usual 45-minute scroll.
